During the month of April, the third meeting of the GreenEU project took place in the beautiful municipality of Cervia, Italy. This exciting event brought together young people from all over Europe to address crucial issues related to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change on youth. The meeting was a unique opportunity to foster deeper understanding, promote critical thinking and raise awareness about the specific impact young people face during a crisis.

The world has experienced unprecedented changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic and, at the same time, we are facing a climate crisis that threatens our future. The main objective of this meeting was to better understand the impact of COVID-19 and climate change on young people and how these two crises are intertwined. Participants had the opportunity to share experiences and knowledge, as well as to learn from experts in the field.
During the event, a series of lectures, workshops and discussions were held where young people had the opportunity to express their views, raise questions and explore creative solutions. Efforts were made to foster deeper understanding and enhance critical thinking among participants. In addition, practical activities were organised to increase awareness and knowledge about the specific impact young people face during a crisis.
The GreenEU project meeting in Cervia was a resounding success. Amarante will participate in five European projects for youth, under the program «Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values«, which brings together eight countries, the local authority said today.
The five projects have a duration of two years and, according to the municipality of Porto district, Amarante is the only Portuguese municipality represented.
In this scope, Amarante will receive the partners from Spain, Italy, Hungary, Greece, Slovenia, Cyprus and Croatia, between November 28th and December 1st, in the context of a «project that evokes common European values, such as sustainability, climate change, environment protection, equality, active participation, social inclusion, non-discrimination, democracy and solidarity».
Over three days, tourism, sustainability and sustainable mobility will be discussed and participants from the various countries will be invited to walk the Azenhas Trail.
«We were very pleased to see these five projects approved. Through them we will, with the collaboration of our technicians and the community, youth and associations, promote and raise awareness of values», says Rita Marinho Batista, Youth Councillor.
In 2023 and 2024, the remaining meetings of the five projects scheduled for Amarante will take place, with new visits of European partners to the Portuguese municipality.
The European program Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values was created to «protect and promote the values enshrined in human rights and encourage civic and democratic participation», reads the information from Amarante City Hall.
The Dolores Town Hall is hosting until next Thursday, 20 October, an International Conference on the climate change crisis and the social crisis generated by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The participants, from 8 European countries, will explore, debate and reflect on the current situation in Europe and its local communities in relation to these issues.
The event will be attended by different invited associations and other Spanish institutions.
This event will be the thematic starting point of the project and will introduce the debate on Covid-19 and its effects on European strategies, especially the Green Deal.
The councillor for Youth and European Projects, Efrén Zaplana, pointed out the need to raise awareness and sensitise young people about the serious consequences of climate change. Something that we unfortunately suffered in Dolores, during the DANA, and later at international level with the health crisis caused by Covid».
In relation to the activities that will take place during these days, the councillor pointed out that «this morning, presentations were made by the participants in the project, who explained through projections, the work that they carry out in this regard in their countries, at the head of public or private organisations».
This afternoon there will be a dramatised route through Dolores, a lecture by an expert in climate change from the UMH. Tomorrow there will also be a visit to the El Hondo Natural Park and other activities in which ideas and possible solutions will be exchanged in order to lay the foundations for a common European project.
