Green transition against COVID19 and climate crisis

GREENEU will count on 8 international events in the different partner towns (each event involving around 100 participants). In each event, participants from all project partners will meet in order to explore, by participative activities, how European Union is dealing with current environmental and social challenges, and they will debate and reflect about which is the role of youngsters as EU citizens in their local comunities At the same time, GREENEU will promote the youth active participation at the local level in relation to the present and future of Europe.

GREENEU aims to give a voice and encourage debate among young people, who, on the other hand, have been especially affected by the current crisis and are looking for their own spaces for participation in society. The present network of towns will serve to catalyze these wills and be able to focus them towards greater civic participation in relation to the future of Europe and the sustainability of Europe from local communities.

OBJECTIVES

Along these lines, the project will focus on fostering the participation of young people and promoting their commitment to the main European challenges and their local environment through associations, volunteering or networking. For this, participation structures will be created at the international level (through the different international events) and at the local level (in each of the participating cities) and work will be done to improve their skills, increase their knowledge of the great challenges at European level. and local, and your responsibility to your local community. At the same time, other European values as co-responsibility and cooperation (making different young people from different countries and cultures co-responsible of a common value: the future of Europe), democracy (promoting values like equality, participation and transparency), volunteerism (promoting its value and its impact in their own life, and the benefits of solidarity) and sustainability (promoting the establishment of long term approaches and strategies as well as the respect of future generation).

Among the specific objectives of the GREENEU project:

  • Raise awareness among young Europeans about their role in the framework of the major policies and challenges of the European Union, especially the COVID19 crisis and the climate crisis;
  • Increase knowledge about the great European challenges among the young population;
  • Increase the civic awareness of young Europeans and their commitment to their local community to overcome the current crises;
  • Contribute to disseminating and publicizing European policies on the environment and climate change at local level, with particular emphasis on young Europeans;
  • Promote youth citizen participation and their responsibility as European citizens;

To do this, the GREENEU network proposes 8 international events in which all these issues will be debated and reflected, putting the spotlight on youth citizen participation and their role in the ecological transition, in response to the current COVID crisis19 and in building a more resilient European Union in the face of future crises.

PARTNERS
Municipality of Dolores (Spain)

Dolores is a municipality located in the Alicante province of the Region of Valencia, counts with 7.300 inhabitants approximately and has nearly wetlands with a high value of biodiversity.

Dolores has an important commitment in environment protection and the objectives established by the EU Green Deal. In this line, this municipality has installed solar panels on its facilities, changed the street light system to a more efficient LED bulbs, planting trees, changing all the municipal vehicles to electric ones (including the garbage collection trucks). Not only these actions, Dolores also has prepared the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP), has installed compost bins in every school and also has organized several awareness and formation actions to its citizens about environmental proDolores will be in charge of hosting the first international kick off meeting in march 2022 with an international conference about the “CLIMATE CHANGE CRISIS AND SOCIAL CRISIS GENERATED BY COVID19” pandemic with the following debate with participants and invited experts.

Municipality of Athienou (Cyprus)

The Municipality of Athienou is a Local Authority in the District of Larnaca, Cyprus, with 6.500 inhabitants, functioning with the Laws of Cyprus regarding Municipalities. The Municipal Board of Youth is functioning under the Municipality, operating with an approval of the Cyprus Youth Board. The Municipality has a close collaboration with the Municipal Board of Youth and they both take actions to improve the life of the youth, with seminars for the youth in various subjects, artistic and cultural activities, guidance for job finding and many others.The Municipality has been a partner in European Projects or it was approved for the construction of various projects through European funding. Leading the Volunteering Cities Transfer Network, a project within the URBACT programme, where, Athienou as the Lead Partner in the Network that aimed in transferring the Good Practice of volunteerism of Athienou to 7 other European Cities during the Covid- 19 period, it gave it a lot of experience in civic participation under the COVID-19 crisis.

The Municipality of Athienou (Cyprus) got in 2018 a European recognition because its experience dealing with local volunteering. Athienou counts on a lot of experience working with EU projects, the administrators are very aware about youth issues, European youth policies and the importance of active citizenship. It will foster youth participation in the project, thanks to its network with local schools and youth organisations. This network will be a precious channel for the dissemination of best practices and the promotion of the project initiatives. The Municipality of Athienou will be the host and will organise the second international project event called “EXPLORING THE CRISIS NOTEBOOK”, It will also send delegations of participants to the rest of events and will actively contribute to the rest of project activities, including dissemination and impact tasks.

Municipality of Kalnik (Croatia)

The Municipality of Kalnik is a local government unit with more than 1500 inhabitants, situated in rural, hilly area in northern part of Croatia. The Municipality invests great efforts in raising the awareness and knowledge levels of local citizens, associations which will ensure a high quality of life for all citizens.

Kalnik is the c roatian project partner which will host project event. The Croatian partner together with the community of young people from the municipality will share their experience facing COVID19 social crisis with youth from the other EU member states for achieving goals of the project. The Municipality has many years of experience in international projects with partners from Hungary, Poland in programmes like IPA, Europe for citizens. Kalnik is active in implementing policies in cooperation with its school, support bodies and local community associations like youth association. The Municipality of Kalnik (Croatia) will actively contribute to all project activities. It will organize the third international event called “THE YOUTH IMPACT OF ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL CHALLENGES”, involving local participants. It will also send delegations of participants to the rest of events and will actively contribute to the rest of project activities, including dissemination and impact tasks.

Municipality of Farkadona (Greece)

The Municipality of Farkadona is located in the Region of Thessaly (Central Greece) in a rural area and has 13,400 inhabitants. Its economy its based on agriculture and livestock, commerce and some industries. Farkadona has the first Greek Municipal Youth Council, which is implemented in the frame of the European Local Democracy Week (ELDW), in fact, it has been twice invited by the European Congress of Local and Regional Authorities to annual ELDW meeting in Strasbourg. Farkadona is participating also in some networks like CIVITAS – European Network of Clean Urban Transport Cities and also in some initiatives like European Mobility Week, “Let’s do it Greece” (volunteering environmental actions), and has participated in several programmes and projects, highlighting Erasmus+, highlighting its leader participation in the project of “Capacity Building for Integrated Sustainable Development in Rurar Areas”, and partner in other projects in the framework of the programmes of Europe for Citizens, URBACT, among others. The Municipality of Farkadona will actively contribute to all project activities. It will organize the fourth international event named “BUILDING A RESILIENT FUTURE OF EUROPE”. It will also send delegations of participants to the rest of events. It will actively contribute to the rest of project activities, including dissemination and impact tasks.

Municipality of Karkag (Hungary)

The city of Karcag is a settlement of nearly 20,000 people in the heart of the Hungarian Great Plain, more specifically of the landscape called Nagykunság region.

The concept of sustainability receives special attention in several new projects and investments in Karcag. When investing, Karkag strive to use renewable energy sources whenever possible. There are several NGOs in the city that are interested in protecting and preserving nature, with activities like for example garbage collection campaigns that have been organized. Karkag also will count on the support of the Research Institutes of the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

The Municipality of Karkag will organize the fifth international event in Hungary called “EUROPEAN YOUTH FACING ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL CHALLENGES”. Karkag will involve its local community in order to reach a higher impact of the project activities. Karkag will also send delegations of participants to the rest of international events and will actively contribute to the project dissemination activities and project impact.

Association for Developing Voluntary Work Novo Mesto (Slovenia)

This association is an NGO and humanitarian organisation working in the area of social care and youth to contribute to achieve a more open and inclusive society promoting the values of solidarity, clean environment, participation and intercultural dialogue.

Its main experience is focused on youth, migrants, refugees, women, NEETs, sustainable development and international cooperation. The Novo Mesto Association has a wide experience in EU projects and programmes like Erasmus, H2020, URBACT, INTERREG, among others. Moreover, it coordinates the Regional NGO Centre, so this will provide to the tasks and results of the project the cooperation of other NGOs.

Novo Mesto Association will organize the sixth international event, called “THE EUROPE THAT WE WANT”, will send participants to the rest of meetings and will actively contribute to the project impact and dissemination.

Municipality of Cervia (Italy)

Cervia is a city of about 30,000 inhabitants, is located on the Adriatic coast and has a strong tourist vocation, the city boasts a rich cultural and naturalistic heritage and shows a strong attention to social and environmental issues. The experience that the city of Cervia would like to enhance, share and enrich within the project is the one called Cervia On Air for participation through the radio, that aims to involve the population through a traditional but innovative means: the radio. The radio will be an element of connection between institutions and communities, citizens will be involved and invited to tell about themselves and their expectations and desires. In this logic, the objectives of the GREENEU project and of the EU green Deal can be treated and disseminated and become the subject of discussion and comparison among young people and with young people. Cervia counts on previous EU projects experience and it also counts on an environmental department with the intention of promoting local policies related to environmental issues. In addition, Cervia is working for years promoting social inclusion of its youngsters. The Municipality of Cervia will organize the seventh international event called “WE ALL ARE EUROPE” will send participants to the rest of events and will actively contribute to the rest project impact and dissemination.

Municipality of Amarante (Portugal)

The Municipality of Amarante in the north of Portugal, already has vast experience of participation and execution of applications to European funds of different types, both infrastructural and material. This executive believes that it is possible to learn from the best examples has established partnerships with different stakeholders to involve all local and regional players. The Municipality of Amarante counts on a long experience working in cooperation projects through URBACT programme. It has also participated in a transfer network called “BePath Net” learning about how to improve urban environment by Bees. Amarante counts also on a notable experience dealing with participative approaches and also counts on very active civic associations and organizations as its Youth Centre that is very active in European programs like Erasmus Plus.

The municipality of Amarante will be play an important role in this project due to its vast experience in civic participation, European cooperation and youth. Amarante is a clear example of how adapt European knowledge and ideas to its local policies, adapting its previous experiences in EU project to its daily local initiatives. Amarante will also contribute by its experience of participation and execution of European funds of different types, both infrastructural and immaterial. Amarante has also experience working with local stakeholders (URBACT program) and it will count on the support of its Youth House that is very well experienced EU youth projects. Amarante will organize the final international event called “SPREAD THE WORD”, will send participants to the rest of meetings and will actively contribute to the project impact and dissemination.
